How do you revitalize a franchise? You set it back to the Stone Age. (Literally) Hello internet Brandon here, and I must talk about one of my favorite FPS series Far Cry. While Far Cry Primal isn’t a “shooter” it still captures the amazing fun of the Far Cry series. So enough of this bullshit opening crap let’s just jump right in. The game is best described as Far Cry meets The Beastmaster. (Look it up kiddos) You play as Boga Boga and you must stop the rival tribes from decimating you while you try and rebuild your own. Much in the Far Cry fashion you meet interesting characters such as balding chick who is fascinated with taking the ears of her enemies. The shaman who is constantly making you drink blood and getting you high as fuck. The dude who pisses on you, and a few more down the road. The villains however are vastly uninteresting to say the least. Unlike Far Cry 3 and 4 the villains in Primal are just there. You have a tribal leader who is a cannibal which the game attempts to have you pity him. Then some tribal leader who just likes to burn people alive for her God. You get three interactions with them a piece with all being brief and ultimately boring. The games story is boring it is just plain bad. There is nothing deep, nor crazy that has you wanting more. With this being in the caveman era I was hoping for more of a interesting new tale, and not just kill them because they are evil story. The game looks beautiful. While some say that it is a semi different version of Far Cry 4’s map you’d be hard-pressed to realize that while playing. I couldn’t tell you if the voice acting is good or bad being that they don’t speak English. I personally love the fact they don’t, but I can see a lot of people in the camp of, “Read! What the fuck I ain’t reading shit” My argument against that is would you rather them have British accent or New York, or even better a surfer accent? The gameplay is why I enjoy the hell out of this game. The combat is well… PRIMAL to say the least. You are either shooting arrow, using or throwing spears into people, or my personal favorite beating them to death with a club. Where the game truly shines is in the beast taming mechanic. Taming a beast means that other beast tend to fuck off so you don’t get the horrible Far Cry thing of getting fucked up by a badger. This game funny enough gets stupid easy the more you play, and I am perfectly okay with that. I hate it when you put 8+ hours into a game and the enemies just keep getting harder so you never feel like you’ve progressed at all. I love feeling like King Shit of Fuck Mountain and making my enemies run in fear. The crafting can get tedious at times and constantly grabbing material can get annoying, but if you don’t mind it the gameplay is brutally phenomenal. Overall the game is a great 14+ hour experience with a ton to do and explore. You just might want to put a podcast on while you play because it has no deep rich story to speak of, and you have to read it anyways. I enjoyed the hell out of this game it is so far the best thing I’ve played in Q1 of this year, but The Division comes out tomorrow so we’ll see. I give this a 4/5, if you like Far Cry but were on the fence about this game you should buy it you won’t be disappointed. To the others I highly recommend checking it out we rarely get games like this and it is so cool and interesting I want to see more of these kind of games out there. Ubisoft took a chance on this game and I hope they get a good return investment out of it.
