XCOM : ENEMY UNKNOWN
Hello kids do you like aliens? Do you like turned based strategy games? If you answered no to either one of those two questions then we have a problem. Why? Because Xcom Enemy Unknown is fucking awesome! Seriously this is without a doubt one of the best turned based strategy games that I have ever played. Now for those of you who don’t know this game is more of a remake of the original Xcom game that came out forever ago, now I never played that one but I sort of want to after playing through this game.
This game starts out with a tutorial which if you are new to the game I highly suggest that you do play it because I did play the game without it once and they just plop you right in the middle and it doesn’t seem to have as much of the story if you don’t. So back to what I was saying the game starts you out with the random team of power armored marines to investigate the recent alien attack. No one knows what the hell is going on at this point in the game so it is rather interesting. Then Sally Mcdouchebag who is some commander tells you where to move your troops but instead of using some form of strategy he just gets all but one of your troops killed. After the first mission that’s when you (the Commander) get to make up any type of squad strategy you like. The game’s story isn’t the strongest it mainly includes kill these aliens, capture this one, kill some more. But I had more fun creating my own story within the game. My last play through I made all my troops clones of me with dumb military nicknames like Sharp, and Hatchet. If any of them died I personally screamed up to the heavens NOOOOOOO!!!!
The game has a weird look to it a mixture of cartoon and gore. It is cell shaded which seems to be rather popular these days, but not a bad look for the game in my opinion. I did notice a lot some texture issues that I just really hate now because so many games have that load on the textures. The alien
design however is just great for one reason it barrows from every sci-fi and makes them all into one might I say Covenant (ha Halo reference).
The game sounds fine I like the aliens sounds way more than the voice acting. The game has no music but great sound effects so if you want to play music or maybe listen to The Bloody Screen Podcast while you play I would say it wouldn’t hurt your enjoyment in the slightest.
For those of you bad ass generals out there I have to say can you guys give me some tips on how to beat this game because damn this game is so
fucking hard. What makes matters worse is I got to this point in the game where the game said I took out the leader of the aliens so I thought I beat it. Nope, not even close I just pissed them off. The game starts out easy to get you used to playing and get your troops leveled up a bit. After you capture your first alien that’s when the game gets harder and harder and just maddening. Few games make me scream at my TV this game was one of them. Being that it is a turned based strategy game you tell your characters what to do and who to kill. Well it drives me up the fucking wall when they miss with a 65% hit chance. If you folks want to know something really sad, I’ve restarted this game 6 times now and still haven’t beaten the fucking thing. General S. Patton I am not. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying this in the slightest. This game is just one of the best time killers you can do so much in the game from customize your soldiers to screw over countries you don’t like by refusing to ever help them. If you want to get really invested in the soldiers you command you name them after people you know. I did that in a play-through and let’s just say it made me very sad. I did get a kick out of every time I created Dustin his character somehow, someway always got killed.
Overall this game is great and one of the best strategy games on the market so seriously give it a shot. I give this game a B+ it would’ve gotten an A if I was able to finish or lower I never saw the ending so B+ it shall be.
