Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark Review
Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark is a horrible confusing mess in disguise. Hi Brandon is here with my review of the latest Transformers game, or as I see it one of the greatest disappointments of 2014. See folks I loved, loved War and Fall of Cybertron. I am not a fan of Transformers, but those games were fucking amazing. Which makes me wonder what happened? I figured out the answer to that question; it is not surprising one bit.
The game has a plot that mixes the movie Transformers universe with the Fall of Cybertron universe. Why you ask? Well because the new movie came out, and why the fuck not mix the great games with a compelling story with some rehashed bullshit? Seriously this shit pissed me off so much I just sat there just thinking how could you fuck this up so god damn badly. Anyways I'll have more time to rant as the review goes on, but the story is about a dark spark that can manipulate physics and blah blah blah. The entire mid section of this game is the only saving grace. That is because you are on Cybertron with the characters you know from the previous games continuing the war. On Earth just skip that bullshit because it is a waste of everyones time. Now I want to make one thing clear the movie universe in this game is actually the movie universe. They don't really explain it all that well but apparently there is some time paradox and the Cybertron AutoBots and the Michael Bay ones are in the same game and aren't the same characters. I found this out by looking up if this game was a direct sequel to Fall of Cybertron which in my opinion it isn't . So when this game crashes and burns like it should then we can go back to the games that actually had a good story. The end to this shit isn't worth mentioning at all, it is just we won un-climatic waste of breath.
Normally I don't mention the developers but I must this time because I do believe it has a reason why this game turned out to be the buggy mess it is. High Moon Studios who are the makers of War and Fall of Cybertron did not make this game Edge of Reality did. Those not familiar with Edge of Reality these are the guys you go to when you want a subpar movie tie in game. Games such as The Incredible Hulk, and Over the Hedge, or Shark Tale. I should've known something was wrong when High Moons logo didn't appear on this game.
The games graphics are meh at best for being on the PS4. There is no reason for this besides of course limited budget and time restraints. Those who hate the movie versions of Optimus Prime and Grimlock better get used to them because the last third of this game is with the movie AutoBots that everyone just adores.
The game at least plays like Fall of Cybertron, so that's a plus. It has these boxes you earn by doing random shit and they give you goodies to use. I found leveling up the guns did hardly anything but the items such as health and drones were a nice addition to the game. Now it is hard on normal I died a lot and I mean a lot. That isn't a bad thing unless your game just isn't that compelling like say this game is. The biggest problem I had was when I was picking out weapons, it sometimes would hardlock on my Playstation. It happened three times where it hard locked and I had to restart. I tell you what, never had I been so tense while just selecting a gun praying it wouldn't freeze on me again. Playing as the AutoBots and Decepticons was cool, but without a great story I am the red guys or the purple guys.
In the end this game just got under my skin because the previous ones were just fantastic and this is mediocre at best. I hate the fact they felt the need to add the movie universe at all in this game. I am seriously afraid that this is going to be where the franchise is heading to. If that is the case count me out. I cannot and will not recommend this game to anyone, even the fans of Age of Extinction should stay away from this game. I give this generous 2/5. If it didn't have the Cybertron stuff as the majority it would've been way lower of a rating. I'm sending this out to all AutoBots, run like hell Edge of Reality is coming for you.
