The Worlds End Review
The final hurrah this movie is the final hurrah of the these genre films that Edgar Wright will be doing and it ends with a wet fart. Metaphorically speaking of course and I do over exaggerate because the movie isn't that bad, hell the first time I saw the film I actually dug the shit out of it. But with the recent DVD release of The Worlds End I decided to give it another look.
The plot to this movie, well we have to talk about the main plot and the sub plot. The main plot is five friends go back to the to the town they grew up to finish The Golden Mile. The Golden Mile being a pub crawl with 12 different pubs which means 12 pints of beer. On this crawl it turns out that the entire town has been replaced by the most fragile least threatening robots known to man. The rest of the movie is a mystery on what happened to the town and why are the robots here. There's a few things that made me really think in this movie. First one being with the amount of alcohol these guys consume. They drink more than I ever dreamed about doing and not only do they hardly get slammed but they still have the ability to run, fight and talk in complete coherent sentences. The second thing is how fragile these robots are. These things seem like they are made of glass, how there heads explode and how easy it is to take them out. Yet I do understand it because it would be hard as hell to convince people of five drunk guys taking on a army of Terminators or ED209's. The sub plot is mainly around Simon Pegg's character Gary. Gary was the guy everyone thought was the coolest most badass guy in high school, but he never grew up. The entire sub plot is him living in the past and his friends realizing that he needs help to bring him out of the past and into the present. Now from what I explained I bet you think that this is a pretty predictable movie. You are wrong sir this movie's ending is out there and it was rather a nice surprise. I actually want to see a sequel to the world they created at the end of the movie because well they make it look more interesting than the movie I finished watching. Sadly the movie has a slow and boring first act, they are trying to set up characters and the whole reason why they are going back that they end up making the movie drag on and on.
The acting and characters were rather likeable, Simon Pegg plays a washed up loser whose only goal in life is to finish the Golden Mile. Nick Frost actually plays the straight man in this movie. He is a ex-alcoholic and is the only one in the group with any fighting skills. This is a big change for his character which usually is a goofy, childish character. Martin Freeman is in this movie as Oliver. He was the runt in the group and the smartest, they play on that quite a bit. Paddy Considine he is a level headed character who has a mad crush on Oliver's sister who just happens to also be visiting the town. You would recognize him from both Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead. Last you have Eddie Marsan who is the guy in the group without a backbone. He doesn't have a huge role in the movie compared to the rest but he is in most of it.
This of course was written and Directed by Edgar Wright. He has done the other two genre comedies Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead. Sadly he has expressed that this is the last one of these kind of movies he wants to do for awhile, whether or not that stays true we shall see. I hate to say it with this film it seemed like he didn't know what he honestly wanted to do with it. Unlike the previous two movies this one isn't one set genre. This also seemed to have less comedy and more guys sitting around talking about why to leave the past in the past. I will say that this movie is the worst in his work with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and I wish they did one last one to end on a great note.
In the end the movie isn't terrible and it has a couple of funny parts. It just isn't as funny or even as good as the previous films made by this crew. If you rent this I can't see you being to disappointed, just don't get your hopes up on a fantastic film. I rate this a 2 out of 5. The trailer makes this movie look so much better than it actually is. I was so disappointed in this movie.
