THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES - WRITTEN REVIEW
Hi everyone it is your friend and fellow movie goer Brandon here with my review of The Place Beyond the Pines. This movie is, well it is a hard movie for me to review for the fact I am very indifferent about the movie. I want to put a caveat to this movie if you have seen the trailers to this then drop everything you think the trailer told you because it so lied to get you into that theater it is unreal. The trailers show this as more of a dark gritty action film. While the movie is still dark it is more of a crime drama about three individuals whose fate have all intertwined in one specific way I won’t say.
When I said this movie is dark, boy is this fucker dark you would find more light moments in a Hellraiser movie then this film. I was so frigging depressed after this film I almost considered buying a ticket to see the Croods to lighten the mood. Now I think the fact the movie made me feel something at the end of it all says how well this movie is written and acted and directed, hell overall made. Speaking of all of that the movie was written and directed by Derek Cianfrance this guy isn’t a big director he did a lot of documentaries and indie films. That is what this movie is; it started with a limited release and just came to my theater this week so this review is technically a week behind.
The best actor in the movie is Ryan Gosling; this guy like in every role he does just knocks this out of the freaking park. He plays as this carnie who finds out he has a son, he has to provide for his son in some way and his way is to start robbing banks. Now like I said this is a three part story and his is only act one of the three parts. The problem I found with this movie is the fact that he does so well in the film that once they wrap up his part in the story the movie goes downhill. It doesn’t take a dive down where the rest of it is crap. The movie just goes to two less interesting characters, one played by a cop (Bradley Cooper) and the other I won’t say who for those who want to come into this movie fresh.
With this being a three person story and each person having their own story I do have to say they do a fine job wrapping up each individual persons conflicts, and wrapping up the overall ark of the plot. The film can be slow at times and occasionally seem like it drags on and if you are one of those people who can’t stand slow films then go watch your NASCAR and don’t see this movie. I dug this film but I will disagree with all the people ranting and raving on how great it is. I like the dark gritty crime drama, but the film wasn’t perfect. If you are into crime drama movies and you are into the indie
scene then by all means see this film. If you saw the trailers and thought oh an action film with Bradley Cooper, rethink it and if it still sounds like a movie you’d want to see then by all means. Honestly I can’t recommend anyone see this full price because let’s be honest it is going to be on Netflix as soon as the DVD is release. I will recommend a matinee screening though and that’s basically my rating right there I give this a high C+.
