THE LAST OF US
If you were to tell me that the guys who made Crash Bandicoot were going to make a survival horror game that was one of the best in it genre I'd call you crazy. But your friend Brandon is jumping on the I love The Last of Us bandwagon and I have to say it is a great place to be. This game lives up to the hype there are a few negative Nancy's that get their panties in a bunch because of this game. Honestly you are going to have the people who nit pick the hell out of every game and say oh it's not that great. They are full of it, of course the game isn't perfect every game has its flaws but the game is still a great fucking game regardless.
The story is dark and heavy handed just like well every zombie thing ever (excluding Sean of the Dead). What I love is how we see the beginning of the infected apocalypse and then skip to 20 years into where everything is just fucked. You follow Joel a troubled guy who is escorting a girl who may be a cure across the country to get her to this group known as the Fireflys. Never understood why they called themselves that I guess it supposed to sound cool or mysterious. What I love is that girl who I can't remember the name of and Joel hate each other for a good chunk of the game and eventually grow to have this father daughter relationship. This rarely happens for me but I really cared for these characters and at parts was truly worried for them. Now that is good story telling to get me to care about two fictional characters. Now the game I have to say is the biggest dick tease in the world. Literally three times do you think oh this is clearly the end of the game and well it isn't. Being that I rented this from a Redbox that got on my nerves badly, but for the rest of you that own this or Gameflyed this then you won't have a problem with it. It is safe to say boys and girls never Redbox this game it's not worth the stress of trying to beat it a quickly as possible. The story uses every single zombie trop that is out there and I mean every single one! It is still an emotional thrill ride with a ending I thought was good and different then the one I thought would come.
The sound is important in this game. Really important, not just because the dialog was done by professionals, but because there are certain infected that make noises, and they kill you in one hit. If you are not paying attention in this game or you are rushing through it you will get your ass kicked over and over. I can't remember if there was a score that I liked but I did like the voice acting if only every game had voice acting to this caliber.
The game is beautiful it is like a post apocalyptic Uncharted game but better looking than any Uncharted game. This game just shows the apocalypse as how it may be if there were way less people it is all green and vegetation is taking over everything. The infected are generic zombies but you have some that are older infected that look pretty original it was something I haven't seen before. They looked like, well a mushroom face creature it is hard to explain just watch a trailer and you'll know what I am talking about.
The gameplay is how you do survival horror. Seriously to all the people who bitch and moan about Dead Space and Resident Evil going the action route then this is the game you've been waiting for. That's right ladies and gentlemen this game has limited ammo, enemies that can kill you in a single hit,
but wait there is more. The game includes enemies that hunt by sound and has a point that I won't describe but it is towards the end of the game and it is the most suspense filled 30-40 minutes I have ever had in a video game. The game is brutal as fuck, seriously hand to hand combat feels like you are messing a guy up. In Uncharted you beat up guys like Indiana Jones you know fun and campy like. This feels more like if you personally take a baseball bat to someone's head. Now it do disagree with one thing in the game because it is well horse shit. The game lets you use shivs, well you can only use it one time. It is one and done, you can upgrade to use it twice but still what knife can you only use twice before it breaks. The crafting is basic and can be done anywhere. Upgrades to Joel are basic but also extremely useful. The weapon upgrades I honestly hardly noticed except for the capacity. I thought the game was a fun to play but only suspenseful when fighting the infected. Humans were honestly a cake walk because they think they can take cover.
Overall the game is great and if you like zombies, survival horror, post apocalyptic, or just good story telling then you will love this game. I give this a low A- just because it had some game mechanics like the shivs and the fact Joel is the only one who reacts to getting shot. It is still an amazing game and I think most gamers should play it.
