The Croods Review
It's a new DVD release I know what you're thinking oh is it time for Pacific Rim? No think kids movie, and not Monsters University. That's right Ice Age I mean The Croods. The Croods is that children's movie that is about the wacky adventures of a family of cavemen. I wish I could say that this was one of those kids movies that the parents want to see and love too. It's not people it just isn't even close to it. This is a slightly better version of Ice Age, I know the two movies have nothing to do with each other but that's how I see it.
The plot to this movie is a simple one so for many years the Croods have lived by a simple rule in life. Everything is dangerous and fear is what will keep you alive. Of course Grug (the father of the family) has a teenage daughter named Eep and she is going through her rebellious stage. She meets up with this strange boy named Guy, he tells her that the world is ending and they must get to high ground to be safe. They are cavemen so the thinking of the world is ending but if we go higher we'll be safe seems right up their ally. When you see how the world is ending your first thought is there is no way they are going to survive this but remember it's a kids movie so continuity or even just the realm of reality is right out the window. They end up going with guy on this adventure to higher ground and majority of the plot is Grug accepting the fact he can't always be there for his family and he isn't all knowing. That is what surprised me because when you see the trailer to this movie you think oh the movies a love story between Eep and Guy. While that plot is in there it's not the main story arc. The ending is cheesy and predictable, it kind of made me angry because they set up this powerful sad ending just to be like wait! We have 15 more minutes of crap that we must show you to ruin the end that you thought was great. Yet again I understand it is a kids movie so they can't choose any form of a darker not cheery ending.
To my surprise they didn't have a bunch of popular music from today as the soundtrack. I was really thinking that they would be playing everything off the top 100 charts. It is more just a lot of bongo drums and orchestral music. The voice acting is great, this is a Nicholas Cadge movie that I don't hate; yes one of the few. He is good as Grug, but I think who really stole the show was Ryan Reynolds as Guy. He was funny and the only relatable character in the movie about Cavemen. Emma Stone played as Eep, which I didn't know that until the credits, it wasn't that she was bad just had no idea she voice her.
The Croods looks amazing, this is a colorful and original looking film. Instead of having all the animals look like what we are used to them looking like they make them all sorts of fucked up. An example would be that the Sabretooth tiger has a big head on a smaller body, blue fur, and the big ass teeth. That is a big change say from what we are used to seeing them as. I do dig the art style and the animation of this movie a lot. I could recommend this movie alone just based off how it looks.
In the end the movie isn't bad and if you are going to Redbox something for your kids this wouldn't be a bad choice. If you don't have kids I don't see a reason to truly recommend this movie besides for the art. My closing thoughts are that the movie has a simple plot with nothing special about it. The writing isn't bad some of the dialog is funny but not as funny as other children's movies out there. The art style is great and it looks amazing on the right tv. Last the voice acting is good I can't think of anyone that did poorly. This is a kids movie that your kids might love but you will think that it is just meh. I give this a 2.5 out of 5.
