Snowpiercer Review
We've seen post apocalyptic in the jungle, on the sea, in the desert, and with apes, but how about a train? Hey good movie goers Brandon here with a review of Snowpiercer, the limited released movie taking the summer by storm. I will say if you are a hardcore movie fan see this movie it'll tickle you in all the right places. This can currently be found on Amazon to rent or buy while still in theaters which I find amazing and think more movies should do such a thing. Anyways lets get on with the review.
This movie is a post apocalyptic movie where the climate went to shit and everyone in the world is living on a train. This train of course is the ark of humanity and is self sustaining and sci-fi mumbo jumbo. You follow Curtis who is getting ready to lead a rebellion to the front of the train to take it over. Why? Well that's simple like you'd expect the rich people live in luxury in the front of the train while the poor people live in the back. It is class warfare at it's finest. What I love is that they don't waste time with Curtis finding himself just to finally lead the rebellion. They start out with this is happening and you will see two hours of the rise of the poor. This movie is dark and I mean dark. There are times when I was just thinking, "Jesus Christ lighten up a bit." not that the movie needed to or should've just be ready for depression. This movie is not predictable in the slightest the ending was cool and very open ended.
The actors which are few noticeable ones but they all do great. Chris Evans is the protagonist Curtis or the one American on the train. His character is the only one that gets a deep backstory and I can say he has been through some shit. Evans as always proves again that he can play a serious role and do it quite well in that fact. I'm a huge fan of his and with him being in roles like these I cannot wait for more. Kang-ho Song is the doorman in this movie (I never caught his name) he is great for someone I've never seen before. I had one problem with his character. He didn't speak english and they used translator to understand him. Yet there was many times in the movie where they didn't use it and understood him just fine. I feel like they could've done something different with the character. Jamie Bell plays Edgar or the same role he always is. That role being the young guy just begging for action. He is just there to be a dick and someone for Chris Evans to explain shit to.
Director Joon-ho Bong did an amazing job directing and writing the script. He uses tropes from other post apocalyptic movies while keeping to a original concept and storyline. I can't compare this to his other work being that I haven't seen it yet, but if this is his start to doing films for the West I welcome him with open arms.
In the end I loved this movie it had some cliche moments but balanced all those out with original twist and turns. This movie is exciting and compelling to the very end. Also has a big thing with loss of limbs but that's beside the point. I give Snowpiercer 4.5/5. I leave with this; the next movie I want to see in this genre is post apocalyptic bar, a whole lot of booze.
