DJANGO UNCHAINED - WRITTEN REVIEW
Good morning everyone it’s a beautiful Tuesday morning and your pal Brandon has to ask you want to talk about some good ole western movies? No? Too bad I’m talking about Django Unchained which is a remake of the 1966
movie called Django. I never saw the original Django but I do know this has nothing at all to do with that movie when they remade this movie they remade it from scratch. I’ve read the premise of the original all I can say is come on
Tarantino why couldn’t Django drag around a bunch of coffins that just sounds so badass. One thing I love doing to people is pronouncing the D in Django they always correct me they never pick up I am messing with them. So anyways the movie is a kick ass western, directed by Quinton Tarantino and the dude knows how to make a grindhouse western movie.
So the plot to this film is rather a simple revenge story of a slave named Django who got his freedom because a bounty hunter, sorry German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz buys his freedom so he can help identify his bounty. The two become friends and find out the Django’s wife is being held by a ruthless plantation owner named Calvin Candie, and they decide with this grand scheme to free her. One thing I didn’t fully understand maybe it’s my feeble critic brain but the plan these two come up with to save her is ridiculous you think they’d just be like oh I’ll give you 5000 dollars for her and be done with it but hell it leads to a very interesting story. My personal favorite part of this film isn’t the main plot but the story leading up to it toward the beginning and middle of the movie the Dr. and Django are bounty hunting to earn some cash and I just thought that was the coolest freaking thing ever. I loved that so much I plopped in Red Dead Redemption to go bounty hunt some low lives. The movie does take a turn I didn’t see coming in the third act I thought it was amazing let me just say blood, blood, and just so much blood I go a murder boner.
Jamie Fox play Django the free slave and I have to say Django is kind of a one dimensional character he is the freed slave who is really just
that old west badass. That isn’t a bad thing in the slightest if you think about a lot of the old west movies that were amazing like Good the Bad and the Ugly Clint Eastwood isn’t a deep character he is this grizzled badass. That in my opinion works wonderfully in westerns. Christoph Waltz is the one everyone including the academy awards kept talking about in this movie. He deserves his praise he is excellent in this movie this guy is the smart but deadly character that we all love to see. I really like about this character, is that he is the one non-racist white guy in the whole fucking film. It made me laugh on how every other white guy is shouting N word this and that and he kills the shit out of most of them it is interesting to see the German character in a western film. Leonardo DiCaprio is good as the villain in this film he isn’t a dangerous villain as the sense of that he can’t stand toe to toe with the protagonist but he is dangerous because he is rich and has goons. I think his character really was reminiscent of the typical villain you know the one with the curly mustache and top hat going mehhhhh I will tie this lady to the rail road tracks. Basically I’m saying he really overplayed the villain but in a movie like this I think he needed to be.
Quinton Tarantino directed and wrote and had a small role in the movie and this feels like a Tarantino movie. I said this was a grindhouse western which doesn’t make sense but if you’ve seen the movie the plot is more like a grindhouse film while the era is western so it makes it a nice and interesting twist. Some people complained on how much the N word was said in this film. I honestly want to believe Tarantino wanted to show how racist and pathetic this time period was it is like when you see that racist in today’s society you just stop and think wow that person in a moron and I think that is what he was trying to prove. That or just get away with saying it a ton. I honestly didn’t notice it a whole lot but I guess the word means nothing to me. I’m glad he dipped his toe into westerns finally I love his Kung Fu movies and his crime movies so why not westerns.
If you haven’t seen this movie then yet go to your nearest Redbox and rent it for a dollar. You have a dollar don’t you honestly this movie is amazing I loved the shit out of it I say buy it on DVD or Blu Ray honestly. You will not be disappointed I give this a B.
