American Hustle Review
Hey folks Brandon here again with a serious question. Can you make a movie with characters that are all completely unlikable and still have the audience end up rooting for two of them? The answer is yes and the movie that does that extremely well is of course The Hobbit. Wait what review am I doing oh yeah American Hustle, American Hustle is that movie I was talking about. Some are touting this as a fantastic comedy, I can't really count this as a comedy. I'd put this in more of a crime with some drama and comedy dabbed on the side.
The plot for those of you who don't know is conmen Irving and Sydney are caught by the FBI. Agent Richie DiMaso is looking to make a name for himself and he makes a deal with them to help talk down crime that is going on in politics. That is the main plot the side plot is a love web with Irving, Sydney, Richie, and Rosalyn (Irving's wife). That is where all the emotion hits in this film because you can see how these people not only need each other but they end up destroying each other as well. The film ends up getting a bit slow in the middle when the characters are all giving up and you kind of feel like it drags. The ending makes up for the film completely because it is just the ending you want to see from a film like this. The film is an emotion roller coaster it'll make you laugh, feel pity, sad, hell even a bit horny at times. I have to say the movie isn't completely predictable you won't be able to guess the entire ending but you may get the overall end right.
The characters is what hits for this movie. If it wasn't for these actors the film would've been your cookie cutter crime film. What they do great is throughout the film you hear a monologue from each of the main characters about the situation. Christian Bale is Irving Rosenfeld, this guy is a overweight balding con man. You first see him and he is a piece of shit and honestly I just wanted bad things to happen to him. He is cheating on his wife, coning people out of thousands of dollars and not appreciating the fine ass of Amy Adams. By the halfway point in the movie those bad things you'd hope would happen to him end up making you feel bad for him, and I ended up rooting for him in the end.
Amy Adams plays Sydney Prosser, she is a con woman that is Irving's love interest throughout the movie. She is so frigging hot I can't help myself but to mention that they make Amy Adams so beautiful in this movie that she made it to the top of my celebrity list. They make her into this sex symbol in the movie that both Irving and Richie are fighting over her. At one point literally fighting over her. She also is a character you end up feeling pity for and you can only hope everything works out for her the entire film.
Bradley Cooper is the FBI agent Richie DiMaso. When you first see him you figure him to be the protagonist of the film. The amazing thing in this movie is how they take a guy you thought you were going to root for, and the more they reveal the more you notice that maybe he isn't such a good guy after all. Jennifer Lawrence plays Irving's wife Rosalyn, talk about maybe my personal vote for worst in movie. Now not in the fact that she does anything bad she is amazing but she plays such a shit bag you can't help but to hate her. Rosalyn endangers her child, is the entire reason why Irving's all fucked up and worst of all she is a fucking moron. Jennifer is the funniest in the movie and one of the strongest characters. The movie wouldn't be the same without her. Last Jeremy Renner is Mayor Carmine. In the trailer to this film they make him seem like the devil. Which the moment you see this guy on the screen he is a saint. The worst thing this guy does is try and help out the state of New Jersey.
The Director is David O. Russell who made both the Fighter and Silver Lining Playbook. While I don't think that this is his best movie I sure do think he did an amazing job with it. The movie says some of it is based on facts, how much of that is up for debate. This feels like his other movies in the fact he takes a simple plot and makes the movie something Oscar worthy by how he does characterization. David O. Russell also helped write this movie and I hate to take any credit from Eric Singer but this feels like David did way more in the script department then he did. My hat is off to you sir another job well done.
Overall the movie is great for movie buffs. If you are a film nerd you will enjoy this way more than the average audience. Most people will still enjoy this but those people that like movie like Anchorman maybe rent this you may not enjoy it as much. The only thing I must say is this movie isn't terribly funny it has it's moments but it isn't a laugh out loud comedy. I give this a 4 out of 5 it isn't perfect because in the middle I did think it was slow in the middle.
