42 - WRITTEN REVIEW
Aloha it’s your pal Brandon here with my first written movie review. The movie I shall be reviewing is 42; this movie is based off of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Now the reason why this review isn’t out sooner is, well because I can’t get to the theaters usually until Sunday due to work. So anyway let’s talk about some baseball. As you know 42 is a sports movie which usually when you tell me that I would give you a long sigh accompanied with telling you the typical plot. You know what plot I am talking about the one where a underdog team keeps losing and they find that one person to turn them around. That person could be a player, coach, or in rare cases and mentally handicap person. Whoever they are they show up and help win the game all the way to the championship. In the film 42 they still use that same plot as a base and build upon that in a way I never thought possible. What is that way I speak of? They make this movie awe-inspiring, and a great film that I could recommend to everyone I see.
42 is a movie about the beginning of Jackie Robinson’s major league baseball career. They don’t give Jackie too much back story on how he grew up all that is important is he hates segregation. For the two of you out there who haven’t the slightest idea what segregation means, it mean to separate things or people. So as you may have guessed this movie takes place before the Civil Rights movement, it takes place in the late 40’s. I believe the movie really captures the 40’s well with how the people act, how they talk and how they dress. What I truly believe that is strong about this movie is how they capture the racism that took place back in those days.
I know what thought just went through your mind, is this one of those white people are evil kind of movies? I respond to that thought with a hell no, while they do show racism to a powerful affect they also show people in general being decent and seeing how ridiculous the whole thought of racism truly is. The majority of the movie is the owner of the Dodgers Rickey (played by Harrison Ford) is trying to change baseball by letting a black man play in the league. He has a number of reasons of course one of the main reasons is to get the African Americans in to the stands. Harrison Ford does an excellent job in his role as Dodger’s team owner. He is basically that old pissed off man with a heart of gold. I do have to say either Harrison Ford was wearing a fat suit or they let him pack on a few because the guy looks like he’s got that stomach from eating nothing but Doritos Tacos and drinking nothing but Lone Star.
The whole movie is about Jackie of course and how he changed baseball for the better. Jackie is played by Chadwick Boseman, before this movie his whole career has been on TV dramas. After seeing this role I hope this guy does more movies because he does a great job. See kids, people in that day were extremely racist and he is told if he wants to make a difference and change how people look and feel towards him he has to just sit there and take
it. Seeing how this actor is trying to hide his emotions is more powerful than seeing someone who is all how I say overacting with emotions. This character has personality and you get to feel for him and sympathies with his character and his struggle. I found myself almost clapping when he made his first home run in the Major Leagues.
This movie was written and directed by Brian Helgeland this guy has written some of my favorite movies such as Man on Fire and Mystic River. He does an excellent job with the writing with it being clever and moving. He also gives characters there due Jackie’s teammates are even given their own struggle in the movie and they overcome it all.
Overall I can say is go see this movie. Sure you can guess the basic plot but it is worth seeing full price this is without a doubt the best sports themed movie I have ever seen. I can say that no matter who you are and what kind of movies you like you’ll like this film. I give this a B+.
